How Is Pure Alcohol Content Calculated?
Pure alcohol (g) = Volume (ml) × ABV (%) ÷ 100 × 0.789 (ethanol density, g/ml). For example, a 355ml beer at 5% ABV contains 355 × 0.05 × 0.789 ≈ 14.0g of pure alcohol. Because different drinks (beer, wine, spirits) come in very different serving sizes even at similar ABV, comparing pure alcohol grams is more accurate than comparing "number of drinks."
