01

What This 2026 Estimate Includes

The calculator treats the annual amount entered as taxable, pensionable, and insurable employment income. It applies the 2026 federal and selected provincial tax brackets before credits, then adds employee pension and insurance contributions. The result is a bracket-only comparison, not a tax return or payroll calculation.

02

Federal and Provincial Brackets Used

The 2026 federal brackets are 14% to $58,523; 20.5% to $117,045; 26% to $181,440; 29% to $258,482; and 33% above that amount. The province menu contains Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec only. Federal and selected provincial bracket tax are calculated separately before credits.

03

Employee Contributions Used

Outside Quebec, the estimate uses employee CPP at 5.95% on earnings from $3,500 to the $74,600 YMPE, CPP2 at 4% from $74,600 to $85,000, and EI at 1.63% up to $68,900. Quebec uses employee QPP at 6.30% over the same first pensionable range, QPP2 at 4% to $85,000, Quebec EI at 1.30% up to $68,900, and QPIP at 0.430% up to $103,000.

04

Credits and Adjustments Are Excluded

The calculator does not apply basic personal amounts, other federal or provincial credits, deductions, Ontario surtax or health premium, British Columbia tax reduction, the Quebec abatement, Quebec-specific credits, or payroll-period and year-to-date adjustments. The official Quebec abatement is 16.5% of Basic Federal Tax payable, which this before-credits model does not calculate. It also does not calculate employer or self-employed contributions. These omissions can materially change actual tax and pay.

05

How to Read the Result

Federal and provincial lines show raw bracket tax before credits. Employee contributions are listed separately. Estimated deductions add those three lines, and estimated remainder subtracts that total from the entered income. The displayed percentage is estimated deductions divided by entered income; it is not an effective income-tax rate.

06

Use the Result as a Limited Comparison

Use the same income to compare the four available province models or to see how bracket changes affect this simplified estimate. Do not use the result as a promise of take-home pay, tax owing, or a refund. For filing or payroll decisions, use the relevant federal and provincial official calculators and your own deductions and credits.

Frequently asked questions

How are federal and provincial amounts calculated?
The calculator applies each 2026 bracket rate only to the part of the entered income within that bracket. It calculates the selected province separately. It does not apply the Quebec abatement because that reduction is based on Basic Federal Tax payable, not raw bracket tax before credits.
Which employee contributions are included?
Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta use CPP, CPP2, and the standard EI employee rate. Quebec uses QPP, QPP2, the Quebec EI employee rate, and QPIP. Each contribution uses its 2026 earnings limit, but pay-period and year-to-date rules are not modelled.
Is the displayed percentage my effective tax rate?
No. It divides the calculator’s estimated bracket tax before credits plus employee contributions by the income entered. Because the numerator includes contributions and omits tax credits and other adjustments, it should be read only as an estimated deduction rate.
Which provinces does the calculator support?
The current menu supports Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec. It does not model the other provinces or territories, and the four available results still exclude province-specific credits and several adjustments.
Will this equal my tax return or take-home pay?
No. The input does not capture deductions, credits, pay frequency, year-to-date deductions, other income, or individual circumstances. Use this as a limited bracket comparison and check official calculators for a payroll or tax-return estimate.
