Weekly Holiday Pay Information

πŸ“Œ Korean Labor Standards Act Article 55
β€’ Employers must provide at least one paid holiday per week for workers who work all scheduled days
β€’ Holiday Pay = (Weekly Hours Γ· 40) Γ— 8 Γ— Hourly Wage
β€’ One week means 7 days including holidays
β€’ Only workers with 15+ hours per week are eligible

What Is Weekly Holiday Pay?

Weekly holiday pay (juhyu-sudang) is a paid-holiday allowance required by Article 55 of the Korean Labor Standards Act for employees who work all of their scheduled days during a week. Employers must grant at least one paid day off per week, and the wage paid for that day off is the weekly holiday pay. Because it compensates a day on which no work is actually performed, it applies equally to full-time, part-time, and hourly workers as long as the conditions are met.

How to Calculate Weekly Holiday Pay

Weekly holiday pay is calculated with the formula (weekly hours Γ· 40) Γ— 8 Γ— hourly wage. For example, at an hourly wage of 10,000 KRW and 40 hours per week, the weekly holiday pay is (40 Γ· 40) Γ— 8 Γ— 10,000 = 80,000 KRW. Adding this to the actual work pay of 400,000 KRW gives a weekly wage of 480,000 KRW. To convert to a monthly figure, multiply the weekly wage by 4.345, the average number of weeks in a month.

Eligibility Requirements

Three conditions must all be satisfied for weekly holiday pay to accrue. First, contracted weekly working hours must be at least 15. Second, the employee must work every scheduled workday defined in the employment contract without absence. Third, work must be scheduled to continue into the following week. Very short-time workers with fewer than 15 hours per week are excluded from weekly holiday pay.

Important Notes

If there is an absence during the week, the perfect-attendance requirement may not be met and weekly holiday pay may not accrue. Tardiness and early leave are generally not treated as absences, but rules can vary by workplace, so it is best to check your employment contract. In addition, the monthly salary of salaried workers often already includes weekly holiday pay, so review the components of your pay before requesting it as an extra payment.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for weekly holiday pay?
Any worker β€” full-time, hourly, or part-time β€” is eligible if their contracted weekly hours are at least 15, they worked every scheduled day without absence, and work is scheduled to continue the following week.
What is the formula for weekly holiday pay?
Weekly holiday pay = (weekly hours Γ· 40) Γ— 8 Γ— hourly wage. For example, at 10,000 KRW per hour and 40 hours per week, the holiday pay is 80,000 KRW.
Do salaried workers receive weekly holiday pay separately?
Usually not. A salaried worker's monthly pay generally already includes weekly holiday pay, so check the breakdown of your payslip first.
Do absences or tardiness affect weekly holiday pay?
An absence during the week can break the perfect-attendance requirement and forfeit the holiday pay. Tardiness and early leave are usually not treated as absences, but this can vary by workplace, so check your employment contract or work rules.
