What Is the Rockport Walk Test?

The Rockport 1-Mile Walk Test, developed by Kline et al. in 1987, estimates VO2max from the time to walk 1 mile (1.609km) as fast as possible on a track and the heart rate immediately after. It can be performed safely by people for whom running is too strenuous.
02

VO2max Formula

VO2max = 132.853 − 0.0769×weight(lb) − 0.3877×age + 6.315×gender(male 1/female 0) − 3.2649×time(min) − 0.1565×heart rate

This formula uses weight in pounds; if you enter kg, the calculator converts it automatically.
03

How to Perform the Test

After a proper warm-up, walk 1 mile as fast as possible on a track or flat surface (do not run). Immediately upon finishing, count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4, or measure instantly with a heart rate monitor. Accurate time and heart rate measurement are key to accurate results.
04

Interpreting the Results

A higher VO2max indicates better cardiorespiratory endurance. It is common to compare relatively within the same age and gender group, and to retest periodically to track change over time.
05

Limitations of the Rockport Test

This formula was derived from a study of adults aged 30-69, so it may be less accurate outside that age range. Results can also be distorted if you do not walk at a fast enough pace or if heart rate measurement is inaccurate.

Precautions Before Testing

If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, a recent surgery or injury, or are pregnant, consult a doctor before testing. Stop immediately and seek medical help if you experience chest pain, severe dizziness, or shortness of breath during the test.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more accurate: the Rockport test or the Cooper test?
Both are field estimation formulas with some error compared to direct lab measurement. The Rockport test, being walk-based, suits beginners or those with joint issues, while the Cooper test, being run-based, suits people with a higher fitness level. Choose based on your goals and physical condition.
How should I measure my heart rate?
Count your pulse for 15 seconds immediately after finishing and multiply by 4, or measure instantly with a heart rate monitor or smartwatch. Heart rate drops quickly after you stop walking, so measure as promptly as possible for accuracy.
Can I use this result to set my own exercise intensity?
This tool provides a reference estimate only. Always consult a medical professional or exercise specialist before designing an exercise program or making any heart-related decisions.
