What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is the standard placeholder text used in the design and publishing industries to fill a layout before real content is ready. The text, which begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit...", is believed to derive from a scrambled and altered passage of the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero's work "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written around 45 BC. It spread widely through 1960s typesetting specimen sheets and remains the most common filler text used by designers and developers worldwide today.

02

Why Use Dummy Text Instead of Real Copy?

When designers review a layout, readable real sentences tend to draw attention to the content itself, making it harder to objectively judge visual elements like whitespace, font size, line height, and alignment. Meaningless Latin-based filler like Lorem Ipsum "looks like plausible text but isn't actually meant to be read," letting reviewers focus purely on design. It is also handy for sharing or approving mockups before the real copy is finished.

03

Paragraph / Sentence / Word Generation Modes

In paragraph mode, 4-6 sentences are grouped into each paragraph, and paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Sentence mode shuffles the sentence bank and picks the requested number of sentences, joining them together. Word mode splits each sentence into individual words and cycles through them until the exact requested word count is reached. In paragraph mode you can also choose whether to start with the classic opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..."

When to Use Korean, Japanese, or Chinese Dummy Text

For multilingual products or projects using CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) fonts, Latin Lorem Ipsum alone can't show you how text will actually render on screen. Korean syllable blocks vary in width depending on their consonant/vowel composition, Japanese mixes hiragana, katakana, and kanji with different line-break points, and Chinese characters are visually denser, so the same character count can feel much longer. Testing with dummy text in the same script as your actual service language helps you catch typography, line-wrapping, and font-rendering issues before you localize and ship.

Tips for Using It with Your CMS or Design Tool

When filling mockups in WordPress, Notion, Figma, or any CMS/design tool, generate a length (character count, paragraph count) similar to what the real content will be, to minimize layout shifts once real copy is added. For example, try 2-3 sentences for card UI, or 3-5 paragraphs for a detail page body. Since generated text isn't real content, always remember to swap it for the actual copy before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Lorem Ipsum" actually mean?
It doesn't have a coherent meaning - it is deliberately scrambled and altered Latin derived from Cicero's writing. Because it reads as plausible but meaningless text, viewers focus on design rather than being distracted by legible content.
Is it safe to use in a production site?
No. Lorem Ipsum and other dummy text are only meant as placeholders during design and development. Always replace them with reviewed, real content before launch.
Why include Korean, Japanese, and Chinese options?
CJK scripts differ from Latin text in character width, line-break rules, and font rendering, so Latin Lorem Ipsum alone can't preview a CJK layout accurately. Testing with dummy text in the target script helps catch multilingual layout issues early.
Can I copy the generated output?
Yes. Click the Copy button below the result box to copy the entire generated text to your clipboard.
