What is an Area Code?

An area code is a regional telephone identifier used when making long-distance calls. It can be omitted when calling within the same area, but must be included when calling another region or calling a landline from a mobile phone. Seoul uses the two-digit 02, while most other regions use three-digit codes beginning with 0.

02

Nationwide Area Code System

Korean area codes are assigned by metropolitan city and province. Representative codes are Seoul 02, Busan 051, Daegu 053, Incheon 032, Gwangju 062, Daejeon 042, Ulsan 052, and Sejong 044. At the provincial level: Gyeonggi 031, Gangwon 033, Chungbuk 043, Chungnam 041, Jeonbuk 063, Jeonnam 061, Gyeongbuk 054, Gyeongnam 055, and Jeju 064. Some adjacent regions share a code, such as Incheon and Bucheon in Gyeonggi both using 032.

Tips for Using Area Codes

When calling a landline from a mobile phone, you must dial the area code to connect. Internet phone numbers (070) and mobile numbers (010) are separate identifiers, not area codes. Area codes can change when a business relocates, so it is good practice to include the area code when listing a phone number on business cards or notices.
