🧵 Cross Stitch Floss (Skein) Calculator

Enter the finished stitch count for one color to calculate skeins needed. Multiply by number of colors for a rough total-project estimate.

The default of 800 is a community rule of thumb for 14-count Aida with 2 strands. Adjust it for your own fabric count / strand count.

If stitch counts differ per color, calculating each color separately is more accurate. This value assumes "all colors have the same stitch count" as a rough multiplier estimate.

How Many Stitches Does One Skein Cover?

One embroidery floss skein is typically about 8m (8.7yd) of 6-strand cotton floss. In the cross-stitch community, a widely cited rule of thumb is that one skein covers roughly 800 full cross-stitches on 14-count Aida fabric using 2 strands. This is not an exact figure — it varies with fabric count, number of strands used, and individual tension, so this calculator lets you edit the "stitches per skein" value to match your own project.

Skein Calculation Formula

Skeins needed (per color) = ceil(stitch count for that color ÷ stitches per skein)

For example, if a color needs 2,150 stitches and you use 800 stitches per skein, 2,150 ÷ 800 = 2.6875, which rounds up to 3 skeins.

Multiplying by the number of colors gives a "total estimated skeins" figure that assumes every color has the same stitch count — a rough multiplier estimate. Real projects almost always have different stitch counts per color, so for a precise estimate, calculate each color separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 800 stitches per skein the default?
It is a widely shared cross-stitch community rule of thumb for 14-count Aida fabric using 2 strands. If your fabric count or strand count differs, adjust this field to match your own consumption.
Can I calculate total skeins if stitch counts differ per color?
The "total estimated skeins" figure assumes every color has the same stitch count as a rough multiplier estimate. For an accurate total, calculate each color separately using its own stitch count, then add them up.
Does this include half stitches or backstitch?
No, this calculator is based on full cross-stitch count only. Half stitches, backstitch, French knots, and similar details consume additional floss, so account for extra separately.
