How Many Stitches Does One Skein Cover?

One embroidery floss skein is typically about 8m (8.7yd) of 6-strand cotton floss. In the cross-stitch community, a widely cited rule of thumb is that one skein covers roughly 800 full cross-stitches on 14-count Aida fabric using 2 strands. This is not an exact figure — it varies with fabric count, number of strands used, and individual tension, so this calculator lets you edit the "stitches per skein" value to match your own project.

Skein Calculation Formula

Skeins needed (per color) = ceil(stitch count for that color ÷ stitches per skein)

For example, if a color needs 2,150 stitches and you use 800 stitches per skein, 2,150 ÷ 800 = 2.6875, which rounds up to 3 skeins.

Multiplying by the number of colors gives a "total estimated skeins" figure that assumes every color has the same stitch count — a rough multiplier estimate. Real projects almost always have different stitch counts per color, so for a precise estimate, calculate each color separately.
