01

Understanding Hand Rankings

In Texas Hold'em the showdown is decided by the best five-card hand. A Royal Flush is the strongest and High Card the weakest. Memorizing the hand rankings is the foundation of all poker strategy; when ranks tie, the highest card (kicker) decides the winner.

02

Why Starting Hands Matter

The strength of your two hole cards is decisive for your win rate. Premium hands like AA and KK should almost always be raised, while weak hands are best folded over the long run. Suited cards add flush potential and raise a hand's value.

03

Playing by Position

The closer you sit to the button (dealer), the more information you have before acting, which is an advantage. In late position you can widen your range of playable hands; in early position the standard is to play tight with strong hands only.

04

How to Use

This guide is designed to accompany the interactive Texas Hold'em Poker Trainer, which offers two modes. In the Preflop Hand Selection mode you (1) check your position and hand, (2) review the action before you, and (3) choose the correct action (Fold/Call/Raise); this mode is based on Tight-Aggressive (TAG) style strategy. In the Hand Ranking Recognition mode you (1) review the board cards and your hand, (2) find the best 5-card combination, and (3) select the correct hand ranking. Quick hand recognition is fundamental to poker.

Poker Terms

TAG (Tight-Aggressive): Strategy combining tight hand selection with aggressive betting. Play only premium hands, but bet and raise aggressively when you do play. Position: Your seat location relative to the button. Late positions (CO, BTN) have informational advantage, while early positions (UTG, MP) are disadvantaged. VPIP (Voluntarily Put money In Pot): Percentage of hands where you voluntarily put money in the pot. TAG players typically maintain 15-20% VPIP. 3-Bet: Re-raising an opponent's raise. Used with premium hands or as a bluff. Continuation Bet (C-Bet): Betting on the flop after raising preflop. Maintains aggression and helps take down pots. Hand Notation: Simple way to notate poker hands. AA=pocket aces, AKs=Ace-King suited (same suit), AKo=Ace-King offsuit (different suits). "s" means suited (flush possible), "o" means offsuit (different suits). Higher card is written first.
