How Weighted-Average Grades Are Calculated

Current grade = Σ(item score × item weight) ÷ Σ(item weight)

Example: Midterm 88 (weight 40%), Homework 95 (weight 20%), Quizzes 90 (weight 10%)
(88×40 + 95×20 + 90×10) ÷ (40+20+10) = 90.6
02

Final Grade Needed (RogerHub Method)

Score needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Example: current grade 88, target 90, final weight 40% (0.4)
(90 − 88×0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 93 — you need a 93 on the final.
03

When the Required Score Exceeds 100

If the calculated score needed is above 100, your target grade is mathematically out of reach given your current grade and the final's weight. Consider adjusting your target, or talk to your instructor about extra credit or grade replacement options.
04

When the Required Score Is Zero or Negative

A required score at or below 0 means you've already secured your target grade regardless of your final exam performance. Some courses still require a minimum attendance/pass on the final, so check your syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator uses Σ(score×weight)÷Σ(weight), so the result is still a correct relative weighted average regardless of the total. If it doesn't match your syllabus, double-check your entered items.
What formula does the "final grade needed" calculation use?
The same formula popularized by RogerHub's Final Grade Calculator: (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.
What if the score I need is over 100?
That means your target isn't reachable with the current numbers. Consider lowering your target or discussing extra credit / grade replacement with your instructor.
Can I pull my current grade from Tab 1 into Tab 2 automatically?
Yes — click "Use Tab 1 Result" in Tab 2 to auto-fill the current grade you calculated in Tab 1.
