How the Calculation Works

※ German electricity bills consist of a per-kWh usage rate (Arbeitspreis) and a monthly base fee (Grundpreis). ※ Residential usage rates typically range from 0.30 to 0.40 EUR/kWh, and base fees from roughly 10 to 16 EUR/month, varying by region and supplier (this calculator defaults to 0.33 EUR / 14.50 EUR for residential and 0.28 EUR / 15.00 EUR for general use — both adjustable, reflecting BDEW/Verivox 2026 new-customer tariff averages). ※ The federal electricity tax (Stromsteuer) has been fixed at 0.0205 EUR/kWh since 2003 for residential/general households (a reduced rate applies only to qualifying large industrial consumers). ※ A 19% VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) is added to the final amount.

02

What Are Grundpreis and Arbeitspreis?

Grundpreis (base fee) is a fixed monthly charge independent of consumption, while Arbeitspreis (usage rate) is billed per kWh actually consumed. Both vary considerably by supplier and region in Germany, so the defaults here are reference averages you can adjust. Selecting "Year" for the billing period automatically applies 12 months of the base fee.

Electricity Tax, VAT, and the Total

The Stromsteuer is a fixed federal tax calculated as usage (kWh) multiplied by 0.0205 EUR. Adding the usage charge, base fee, and electricity tax gives the net subtotal, to which 19% VAT is applied for the estimated total. For example, a net subtotal of 100 EUR results in 19 EUR VAT, for a total of 119 EUR. Actual bills may include additional items such as network charges (Netzentgelte), so treat this calculator as an approximation.
