1. Why test your webcam?

Checking your camera before a video call, online interview, or stream avoids finding out on the spot that the picture is blurry or choppy. This tool shows a live preview directly in your browser and calculates the actual resolution and frames-per-second in real time.

02

2. How to use it

Click "Start test" and your browser will ask for camera permission. Once allowed, you'll see the live preview along with resolution and FPS. If multiple cameras are connected, switch between them from the device dropdown. Turn on mirror mode to see yourself as in a selfie camera, and use the snapshot button to save the current frame as an image file.

03

3. How resolution and FPS are measured

Resolution is read directly from the actual pixel dimensions the camera is streaming (videoWidth Γ— videoHeight). FPS is measured by counting how many video frames are actually painted per second using the browser's animation frame callback β€” so it reflects the real, experienced frame rate rather than a spec-sheet number. Low light can make a camera extend its exposure time, which can lower FPS.

04

4. Troubleshooting a black or frozen preview

If the preview is black or stuck, check: (1) your OS has granted camera permission to this browser, (2) no other video app already has exclusive access to the camera (most cameras only allow one active user at a time), (3) a laptop's physical privacy shutter is open, (4) an external USB camera's cable is properly connected.

05

5. How is my privacy protected?

This tool only displays your camera feed on screen β€” it is never sent to a server or saved anywhere automatically. Saving a snapshot writes the image straight to your device's downloads folder; nothing is uploaded. Clicking "Stop" or leaving the page immediately releases the camera stream, and your browser shows an indicator whenever the camera is actually active.

Frequently asked questions

If I save a snapshot, does it also upload to a server?
No. The snapshot is generated locally on a canvas in your browser and downloaded directly β€” it is never sent to any server.
I denied camera permission by mistake β€” how do I allow it again?
Click the lock (or info) icon in your address bar, open Site settings, set Camera to "Allow," then refresh the page.
The measured FPS is lower than my camera's spec.
Low light or limited system resources can lower the measured FPS. Try again in better lighting, or close other apps using the camera.
Can I choose which webcam to test?
Yes β€” after starting the test, use the device dropdown to switch instantly between any connected cameras.
