How to Set a Wholesale Price

Wholesale price is calculated as Cost Γ· (1 βˆ’ Target margin). For example, at a $10 cost with a 40% target margin, wholesale price = 10 Γ· 0.6 = $16.67, with a wholesale profit of $6.67. Note the margin here is relative to the wholesale (sale) price, not the cost β€” simply adding 40% to cost gives a different (markup-based) result.
02

What Is Keystone Pricing?

Keystone pricing is a long-standing retail convention that sets the retail price at 2x the wholesale price. For a $16.67 wholesale price, the recommended retail price would be $33.33. Depending on category, marketing spend, and competitive intensity, retailers may use different multipliers β€” 2.2x, 2.5x, or 3x for higher-touch or luxury goods, and closer to 1.5x-2x for high-volume, low-margin categories.

Other Factors to Consider When Pricing

When setting wholesale and retail prices, also account for (1) selling platform fees (Amazon, eBay, Etsy) and payment processing fees (Stripe, PayPal), (2) shipping and returns handling costs, (3) marketing/advertising budget, and (4) competitor pricing and brand positioning β€” otherwise your actual net profit won't match your target margin. This calculator only covers the pure cost-to-margin formula, so pair it with a platform fee calculator to confirm your final price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between wholesale and retail price?
Wholesale price is what a manufacturer or distributor charges a retailer; retail price is what the end customer pays. Retail price is typically set by applying a multiplier (e.g., keystone 2x) to the wholesale price.
Is keystone 2x always used?
No. 2x is a traditional convention only β€” depending on category, competition, and marketing costs, retailers commonly use anywhere from 1.5x to 3x or more. You can enter any custom multiplier in this calculator.
Is the target margin based on wholesale price or cost?
The target margin in this calculator is based on the wholesale (sale) price. If you want the cost-based ratio (markup rate) instead, use the Margin Calculator alongside this one.
Does this include platform fees?
No. This calculator only covers the pure cost/margin/multiplier math. To factor in Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Stripe, or PayPal fees for an actual online sale, check the corresponding platform fee calculator as well.
