Higher plans cost more per month but carry lower card rates, so if you process significant volume, it's worth checking whether the fee savings from upgrading outweigh the extra subscription cost. For example, on the Basic plan, a $100 charge costs 100×0.029+0.30 = $3.20, leaving a net payout of $96.80.

If you use a third-party gateway (Stripe, PayPal, etc.) instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional surcharge on top of that gateway's own processing fee: Basic 2.0%, Grow/Shopify 1.0%, Advanced 0.6%, and Plus is typically negotiated (close to 0%). So your real total cost with a third-party gateway is "the gateway's own rate + Shopify's surcharge." Higher plans carry a lower surcharge, so merchants who must use a specific gateway benefit more from upgrading.

For low volume, Basic + Shopify Payments usually has the lowest total cost. For high volume with an existing preferred payment provider, upgrading to Advanced or higher to reduce the third-party surcharge can pay off.
