The Crate Sizing Formula
The crate-sizing formula widely cited by airline pet travel policies and animal welfare organizations (e.g. ASPCA pet travel guidance) is:
Required Length = body length (nose to base of tail) + leg height ÷ 2
Required Width = shoulder width × 2
Required Height = standing height (the crate must be tall enough for the pet to stand fully upright without ears/head touching the top)
The calculator then recommends the smallest standard commercial crate size that meets all three required dimensions.
