01

What is OPS?

OPS (On-base Plus Slugging) is simply on-base percentage (OBP) plus slugging percentage (SLG), combining a hitter's ability to reach base with their power in one number. The math is just 'OBP + SLG' β€” for example, a hitter with a .350 OBP and .450 SLG has an .800 OPS. While adding two differently-scaled rate stats isn't statistically pure, OPS is easy to calculate and correlates strongly with team run scoring, making it widely used.

02

Direct Mode vs. Stats Mode

If you already know a season's OBP and SLG, the direct mode lets you enter both values to get OPS instantly. If you only have basic counting stats β€” at-bats, hits, walks, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice flies, doubles, triples, and home runs β€” the stats mode automatically calculates OBP and SLG first, then computes OPS in one step.

03

How Are OPS Ratings Classified?

An OPS of .900+ is typically MVP-caliber superstar level, .800-.899 excellent, .700-.799 average, .600-.699 below average, and below .600 poor. In both KBO and MLB, a season OPS above 1.000 marks a hitter as among the league's very best.

04

OPS's Limitations and OPS+

OPS doesn't adjust for park factors or era-specific offensive levels. OPS+ addresses this by scaling OPS relative to league average (set at 100) and adjusting for park effects, making it a fairer way to compare hitters across different ballparks and eras. An OPS+ of 120 means a hitter's offense was 20% better than league average.

05

How to Raise Your OPS

Raising OPS requires attention to both OBP and SLG. Work on plate discipline to draw more walks and lift OBP, while also refining swing mechanics and launch angle to grow power output. A situational approach β€” swinging aggressively in hitter's counts and prioritizing contact in pitcher's counts β€” also helps push OPS higher over a season.

Frequently asked questions

How is OPS calculated?
OPS is on-base percentage plus slugging percentage. For example, a .350 OBP and .450 SLG give an OPS of .350+.450 = .800.
Can I calculate OPS if I only have raw stats, not OBP/SLG?
Yes β€” switch to "From Stats" mode and enter at-bats, hits, walks, HBP, sacrifice flies, doubles, triples, and home runs. The calculator derives OBP and SLG automatically and shows OPS alongside them.
What is considered a good OPS in KBO or MLB?
An OPS of .900+ is MVP-caliber, .800s is excellent, and .700s is average. A season OPS above 1.000 marks a player as among the league's elite hitters.
What's the difference between OPS and OPS+?
OPS is the raw combined rate stat, while OPS+ scales it against league average and park factors, centered at 100. OPS+ is the fairer choice when comparing hitters across different eras or home ballparks.
