What is On-Base Percentage (OBP)?
On-Base Percentage (OBP) measures how often a batter reaches base via hits, walks, or hit-by-pitch. The formula is '(hits + walks + HBP) ÷ (at-bats + walks + HBP + sacrifice flies)'. Unlike batting average, OBP counts walks and HBP, capturing plate discipline as well as hitting ability. For example, 30 hits, 20 walks, and 5 HBP over 100 at-bats with 5 sacrifice flies gives an OBP of (30+20+5)÷(100+20+5+5) = .423.
