Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between GCF and LCM?
The GCF is the largest number that divides two numbers evenly, while the LCM (Least Common Multiple) is the smallest number that both numbers divide into evenly. For any two numbers, their product equals GCF × LCM.
Is the GCF of two coprime numbers always 1?
Yes. Two numbers are coprime if they share no common factor besides 1, and in that case their GCF is always 1.
How is the GCF of three or more numbers calculated?
First find the GCF of two numbers, then find the GCF of that result with the third number, and continue sequentially. The final value divides all of the original numbers evenly.
Why is the Euclidean algorithm so efficient?
Instead of comparing every possible factor of both numbers, it uses remainders to shrink the problem down to smaller numbers at each step, so it reaches the answer in just a few steps even for large numbers.
How is GCF used to simplify a fraction?
Find the GCF of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it to get the fraction in its simplest, irreducible form. For example, 24/36 divided by their GCF of 12 becomes 2/3.
