Basics of Ready-Mix Cubic Meter (m³) Calculation

Cubic meter (m³) is the volume unit for concrete. Formula: m³ = length(m) × width(m) × height(m). Example 1: floor pour 10m × 5m × 0.15m = 7.5m³. Example 2: column 0.4m × 0.4m × 3m = 0.48m³; ten columns = 4.8m³. Example 3: retaining wall 20m × 0.3m × 2m = 12m³. Including waste: add 10% to the calculated volume. If 7.5m³ is needed → order 8.25m³. Weight per m³: concrete density is about 2.4 tons/m³, so 7.5m³ = 18 tons. Conversion: 1m³ = 1,000 liters. Orders are usually placed in 0.5m³ increments.

Ready-Mix Truck Capacity and Types

Truck capacities by size: Small (4.5m³) for narrow streets, detached houses, small projects, with vehicle width 2.2m and a minimum 3m access road. Medium (5m³) is the most common for general construction and apartments, vehicle width 2.5m. Large (6m³+) for large civil works and commercial buildings, vehicle width 2.8m and an access road of 4m or more. Delivery time: pouring must complete within 90 minutes of leaving the plant, within 60 minutes in summer heat. When ordering, check the access road width, parking space, hose reach (max 30m), and whether a pump truck is needed.

Concrete Waste Rate and Margin Considerations

Sources of waste: spillage during pouring (2-3%), formwork gap loss (2-5%), compaction loss (1-3%), truck drum residue (1-2%), measurement error (1-2%); total 7-15%. Recommended waste rates: general floors/slabs 10%, columns/beams 12-15%, retaining walls/foundations 10-12%, stairs 15-20%. Example: design volume 10m³ at 10% waste → order 11m³. With 5m³ trucks, order a total of 3 trucks. Leftover concrete can reinforce ramps and drains; disposal incurs extra cost.

Concrete Volume by Slab, Foundation, and Wall

Slab: width × length × thickness. Example: 10m × 8m × 0.2m = 16m³. Foundation: isolated footing = side² × depth × count, e.g. 1.2m × 1.2m × 0.6m × 20 = 17.28m³. Strip footing = length × width × depth. Mat foundation = building area × thickness. Column: cross-section × height × count. Round column = πr² × height. Square column = width × length × height × count. Wall: length × height × thickness, e.g. 20m × 2.5m × 0.2m = 10m³. Retaining wall (sloped) = ((top thickness + bottom thickness) ÷ 2) × height × length.

Ready-Mix Ordering Checklist and Cautions

Preparation before ordering: accurate volume calculation (including waste), concrete strength selection (21MPa, 24MPa, 27MPa, etc.), slump (workability) specification (120mm, 150mm, 180mm), delivery date/time booking (at least 3 days ahead), site accessibility check, pump truck reservation. Strength: 18MPa for paver bases, 21MPa for general floors/house slabs (most common), 24MPa for apartment columns/beams/load-bearing walls, 27MPa for high-rises/basements. Slump: 80-100mm stiff, 120-150mm standard, 180mm for tight spaces. For simultaneous pours, order trucks at 30-minute intervals.

Concrete Pouring Process and Cost Estimation

Before pouring: complete formwork, inspect rebar, embed electrical/plumbing conduits, wet the base, prepare equipment. Pouring process: ready-mix arrives → slump test → connect pump hose → pour → compact with vibrator → finish surface → cure. Pouring speed: one 5m³ truck takes 20-30 minutes, 10-15 minutes with a pump truck. Cost: material cost = volume × unit price per m³. Pump truck cost for 4 floors or 30m+ distance. Labor cost per day for a crew of 5-7. Curing: at least 7 days of moist curing, reaching 100% design strength after 28 days.
