Reference data is ordered from harder, lighter H grades toward softer, darker B grades. Actual darkness and feel vary between pencil manufacturers.
For a portrait, test HB for construction, 2B for midtones, and 4B for core shadows. The same pencil can appear darker and grainier on rough paper.
The grade name is not an absolute brightness measurement. Paper tooth, pressure, brand, and point shape change the mark, so make swatches on the final paper first.
