The browser skips transparent pixels, groups sampled RGB values into buckets, and ranks the buckets by sample count. The first swatch is the largest sampled group, not an exact mathematical average of the whole image.
For a sunset photo, a six-color result may contain orange, navy, and gray groups. Start with the broad background colors, then choose a smaller accent and paste its HEX value into a design app.
Sampling and color quantization can miss a tiny logo color or a thin line. Screen color also changes with lighting, display profiles, paper, and ink, so proof the palette in the final medium.
