What is Samjae?

Samjae (三災) is a 3-year period of misfortune that, in Korean traditional folk belief, comes to everyone on a 12-year cycle. It lasts for three years in the order of Deul-Samjae (first year), Nul-Samjae (second year), and Nal-Samjae (third year), with the middle year said to require the most caution. Samjae is calculated by zodiac sign, and all signs in the same Samjae group enter Samjae in the same years.

Samjae Groups by Zodiac and How to Calculate

Samjae is divided into four groups. Rat/Dragon/Monkey enter Samjae in the years of the Snake (Deul), Rooster (Nul), and Ox (Nal). Ox/Snake/Rooster enter in the Tiger (Deul), Horse (Nul), and Dog (Nal) years. Tiger/Horse/Dog enter in the Pig (Deul), Rabbit (Nul), and Goat (Nal) years. Rabbit/Goat/Pig enter in the Monkey (Deul), Rat (Nul), and Dragon (Nal) years. Determine your zodiac from your birth year, then compare it with the zodiac of the year you are checking.
