1. Why test your microphone?

Checking your mic before a video call, online class, or voice chat avoids the classic "can you hear me?" moment. This tool uses the browser's Web Audio API to show your live input level as a moving bar and a number, with no software to install β€” just open the page and click start.

02

2. How to use it

Click "Start test" and your browser will ask for microphone permission. Once allowed, the real-time level meter starts moving. Speak in your normal tone and check that the bar sits in the green-to-yellow range. If it constantly hits red, your input gain is likely too high and may cause clipping. If more than one microphone is connected, switch between them from the device dropdown.

03

3. Reading the level meter

The meter shows the instantaneous loudness (RMS) of your mic input on a 0-100 scale. A quiet room is usually under 5, normal conversation sits around 20-60, and shouting or speaking too close to the mic can push it past 80. The "Peak" reading briefly holds the loudest sound detected so far, so you won't miss a sudden noise like tapping the microphone.

04

4. Troubleshooting no sound

If the meter never moves, check in order: (1) your OS has granted microphone permission to this browser, (2) the correct input device is selected in your system sound settings, (3) any physical mute switch or button is off, (4) a USB microphone's cable is properly connected. A laptop's built-in mic can be blocked from the browser if another app (like conferencing software) already has exclusive access to it.

5. How is my privacy protected?

This tool only feeds microphone audio into a Web Audio AnalyserNode inside your browser β€” it is never sent to any server or saved to a file. Clicking "Stop" or leaving the page immediately releases the microphone stream. Your browser also shows a microphone indicator near the address bar whenever it is actually active, so you can always verify it visually.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recorded audio stored on a server?
No. This tool has no recording feature β€” your microphone audio is only processed briefly in browser memory for the meter, and is never transmitted or saved anywhere.
I denied mic permission by mistake β€” how do I allow it again?
Click the lock (or info) icon in your address bar, open Site settings, set Microphone to "Allow," then refresh the page.
The level meter stays red all the time.
Your OS input volume is probably set too high. Lower the input gain in your system sound settings, or move a bit further from the microphone.
Can I choose which microphone to test?
Yes β€” after starting the test, use the device dropdown to switch instantly between any connected microphones.
