Scale Information
1:1000 scale means 1cm on map equals 1000cm (10m) in reality.

Understanding Scale Definition and Notation
Scale is the ratio between distance on a map/drawing and actual distance. 1:1000 scale means 1cm on map = 1000cm (10m) in reality. 1:50,000 topographic map means 1cm map = 500m actual. Larger scale (1:100) shows more detail, smaller scale (1:100000) covers wider area. Architecture drawings: 1:50, 1:100 (detail), 1:200, 1:500 (site plan). Topographic maps: 1:5,000 (urban), 1:25,000 (hiking), 1:50,000 (general). World maps: 1:10,000,000+. Numeric vs graphic scale: Numeric shows 1:10000, graphic shows bar graph.
02
Architectural Drawing Scales
Floor plans: Typically 1:100 scale. 1cm map = 100cm (1m) actual. 20cm × 15cm drawing = 20m × 15m space. Site plans: 1:200~1:500 showing building and surroundings. Detail drawings: 1:5, 1:10, 1:20 for windows, stairs, bathrooms. Elevations/sections: 1:50~1:100. A3 paper (42cm × 30cm): At 1:100 scale can show 42m × 30m space. CAD printing tip: Set scale accurately. 3cm wall on 1:100 drawing = 3cm × 100 = 300cm = 3m actual. Always check scale first when reading drawings.
03
Topographic and Hiking Map Scales
1:25,000 topo maps: Most common for hiking. 4cm map = 1km actual. Contour intervals: 1:25,000 has 10m intervals, 1:50,000 has 20m. 1:5,000 urban plan: 20cm map = 1km. Shows detailed roads and buildings. 1:50,000 topo: 2cm map = 1km. Good for viewing entire hiking route. Google Maps scale: Varies by zoom level, check bottom scale bar. Hiking application: On 1:25,000 map, 2cm distance = 500m actual. At 3km/h walking speed, takes 10 minutes. 5 contour lines (50m elevation) = steep section. GPS integration: Match GPS coordinates with topo map to find current location.
04
Model Making and Scale
Architectural models: 1:100, 1:200 are common. For 1:100 model, actual 3m tall building = 3cm model. Railway models: N-gauge = 1:160, HO-gauge = 1:87, O-gauge = 1:48. Actual 20m train = HO 20m ÷ 87 = 23cm model. Plastic models: 1:48 (large), 1:72 (general), 1:144 (small). Actual 10m fighter jet = 1:72 ~14cm model. Car models: 1:18 (collectible), 1:24 (general), 1:43 (diecast), 1:64 (matchbox), 1:87 (mini). Actual 4.5m sedan = 1:43 ~10.5cm. Figures: 1:6 (30cm action figure), 1:12 (15cm), 1:18 (10cm). Building tip: Mismatched scales look unnatural. Placing 1:87 people in 1:100 building makes people look too large.
05
GIS and Digital Map Scales
Google Maps zoom levels: Level 15 ≈ 1:10,000, Level 13 ≈ 1:50,000, Level 10 ≈ 1:500,000. Screen size effect: Smartphone (6") and desktop (27") have different actual scales at same zoom level. Always check bottom scale bar. Printing caution: Scale may change when printing digital map to A4 paper. Specify scale before printing. GPS accuracy: Typical smartphone GPS has ±5m error. That's 1mm on 1:5,000 map. Official topographic maps: Available as PDFs maintaining scale when printed.
06
Practical Scale Calculation Applications
Real estate floor plans: Usually 1:100 scale. 5cm living room on plan = actual 5m. 2m sofa = 2cm on plan. Interior design: 1:50 scale for detailed furniture layout. Actual 1.8m bed = 3.6cm on plan. Civil engineering: 1:1000 site plan where 10cm = actual 100m. 6cm road width = 60m actual road. Hiking distance: Measure with ruler on 1:25,000 map. 8cm distance = actual 2km. At 4km/h takes 30 minutes. Scale conversion: Enlarging 1:100 to 1:50 requires 200% enlargement (2×). Field verification: Drawings may differ from reality, so measure critical dimensions on-site. Especially for renovations, existing drawings often have inaccurate scales.
