Complete PPM Concentration Guide (2025)
01
Definition and Meaning of PPM
PPM (Parts Per Million) represents one part per million. 1 ppm = 0.0001% = 1mg/L (in water). For example, 1mg of substance dissolved in 1L of water (1,000,000mg) equals 1 ppm. Widely used for air pollutants, water quality testing, chemical solutions, and food additive concentrations.
02
PPM Unit Conversion Formulas
PPM unit conversions: 1 ppm = 0.0001%. Example: 5,000 ppm = 0.5%, 10,000 ppm = 1%. 1% = 10,000 ppm. Example: 5% = 50,000 ppm. 1 ppm = 1,000 ppb. Example: 0.5 ppm = 500 ppb.
03
Water Quality Standards and PPM
Korean drinking water quality standards using PPM/PPB. Residual Chlorine: 0.2-4.0 ppm (mg/L) recommended. Lead (Pb): 10 ppb (0.01 mg/L) or less. Arsenic (As): 10 ppb (0.01 mg/L) or less.
04
Air Pollution and PPM
Air pollutant concentrations in PPM. Carbon Monoxide (CO): indoor safety standard 9 ppm (8-hour average) or less. 50 ppm or more: headache, dizziness. 200 ppm or more: impaired consciousness. 1,000 ppm or more: fatal.
05
Dilution Calculation (C₁V₁ = C₂V₂)
Dilution formula: C₁V₁ = C₂V₂. C₁ = initial concentration, V₁ = initial volume, C₂ = final concentration, V₂ = final volume. Example 1 (Lab Dilution): To dilute 1,000 ppm solution 10 mL to 100 ppm: C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ → 1,000 × 10 = 100 × V₂ → V₂ = 100 mL. Add 90 mL water.

PPM Measurement Methods and Applications
Main methods for measuring PPM concentration. TDS Meter (Total Dissolved Solids): measures total dissolved solids in water in ppm. Used for water purifier performance checks and aquarium management. Tap water is usually 50-200 ppm, purified water is below 10 ppm.
